The International Gem Society defines a gem as “a mineral that was chosen due to the beauty and durability, then cut and polished for human adornment.”

Most gems are minerals. Others, like pearls or amber, are set up from living organisms. Usually gems are of the color that mirrors other natural elements we consider beautiful or valuable. Emeralds mirror the lush green of factories, sapphires include the colour of heaven and rubies are a rich blood-red. There are variations in color to all of those gems, obviously, as well as in diamonds, but those include the colors most normally linked to them.
